I’m sharing two different wine rooms that I have designed for two different clients. Both wanted to turn unused home offices into wine rooms.
It’s a unique concept, especially as people are working from home all over the house, not necessarily in a home office.
If you are an empty nester, you might have an abundance of small rooms in your home too. Instead of having too many bedrooms that might not ever get used, you might want to try a wine room as a place to entertain a few close friends and explore a wine tasting hobby.
Wine Room - Texas Hill Country
This wine room was for a home in the Texas hill country, a remote project.
You can see from the plan that there was a drain on that wall from a water feature, so that could be tapped into for a sink drain.
The homeowners wanted some comfortable seating and a bar with a wine fridge. I added in a little hill country aesthetic in the finishes.
I love the idea of some different flooring in here, either herringbone laid wood that would match the wood in the rest of the home or maybe a herringbone brick floor. Cabinetry and fridge would go into the niche where the closet was and then wallcovering and drapery would add warmth.
Steel glass doors on wine rooms, as opposed to those curly iron doors that have been done a lot in the past, make for a contemporary look. It just brings a wine room right up to 2023 to have more clean-lined doors like this.
Warm wood cabinets with a honed black granite top and some black glass tile for the backsplash for a little shine were hard finishes here. Jute woven wallcovering in a dark gray color, some patterned linen drapery and a caramel leather sofa add softness and texture.
I’m loving bistro shelving these days and there’s no better place to install them than in a wine room.
You don’t see wine stored without refrigeration these days, either as whole conditioned rooms or with the many types of refrigerator units out there on the market today. This client wanted just one tall refrigeration unit and it worked well here.
Wine Room 2
This room was also a study, just off the main entry of the home. The homeowner used a space elsewhere for a home office and wanted to entertain in this space that was convenient to the living room and dining room.
This room was smaller, it would mainly be used by the homeowners as a place to share some wine in the evenings. The window in this room opens to a courtyard, just the perfect place to end the day.
Changing out the French doors for a steel and glass would make for a more modern look.
They preferred two undercounter refrigerators for wine storage with a built-in credenza-like piece.
A painted white brick wall would be a nice accent here and a way to relate to the courtyard beyond. Sheer, tone on tone draperies and Ultrasuede seating would soften the room. A Black and cream geometric rug would bring some of the more modern feel to this room that the rest of the house has.
This is another good spot here for bistro shelving. I liked more of this industrial look with the brick.
I love the idea of a touch of femininity with a white plaster floral chandelier and a pretty full height mirror.
If you have a spare room or an unused space and like tasting wine, this might be just the transformation you are looking for.
Wine Storage
If you are really serious about collecting wine, you might want some refrigerated storage like these glass enclosures in the 2022 and 2023 New American Home.
This storage system, pictured below, from Kessick Wine Cellars (seen at KBIS 2023), makes for a well organized and beautifully displayed wine collection.
Every appliance manufacturer now has wine refrigeration, as collecting wines has become so popular.
These built-in wine refrigeration towers from SKS Appliances that I saw in their beautiful design center in Napa even have tolerance for earthquake tremors. :-)
Don’t have room for a wine wall or wine room?
You can always tuck an undercounter beverage fridge for wine in a kitchen or butler’s pantry just like many of my clients have done.
