I have 3 TV wall challenges to share today with the solutions, as I presented in my Instagram subscriber group Q and A sessions recently.
These are problems that I see often out there, so see if any of these situations might be something you are dealing with now.
(I have even more tv wall solutions linked below for referencing.)
1) TV Niche Too Small For New TV
This new tv does not fit into the existing niche. They really want to have the tv in this location, how can this be mounted to look its best?
This probably isn’t the greatest place for a big tv like this. It is just really huge for this space and it looks to be a high traffic area with the stairs and some hallways around.
Having a high traffic path in front of a tv can be annoying for a layout, however, I know sometimes there is no other option.
So, how do we make this tv work the best way we can?
I would build a lower cabinet to the floor here, to flush out with the wall or maybe extend out a few inches. Then, I’d sheetrock over that niche above the cabinet to be a flat surface.
Mounting the tv on the sheetrock wall then will make the tv fit all on the wall there with a few inches to space on each side.
See the sketch I did, below.
2) Older TV Cabinet Needs Update
This person has an older style cabinet for a tube tv. It’s deep and not that big overall.
It’s a very pretty living room, but she wanted to know how to modify this cabinet to make it work.
You can see there is a French door there on the wall to the left, and the open shelving steps back to 16” deep and then to 10” at the door.
It looks like the tv cabinet is deeper than those, more like 22" or 24” maybe, it flushes out with the fireplace section.
I advised to redo this cabinet at the 16” depth and then to build it out for the tv at the width of that 16” shelf. I’d also remove the 10” deep shelves altogether in the corner, they will just look crowded and busy there without the other open shelving next to it.
There would need to be some carpet patching, but otherwise I think this would be a good solution and get them a wider tv installed with a more up-to-date look.
They could even do a false wall on the tv opening so it could be mounted there with an articulating arm that could pull the tv out and adjust it for better viewing.
3) TV Too High!
This is a very common occurrence that I see people do. They mount the tv way too high.
Not only is it harder to watch, especially if you are a child on the floor, but it just reminds me of a hospital room IMO. I really prefer for a wall mounted tv to be just about 9” above a cabinet of some kind, so that it feels “grounded”.
I see this so often in vacation rentals too, as people aren’t spending much on furniture sometimes, but they get that big tv in the room, on the wall. :-/
This busy mom didn’t like the way the tv was mounted, as it was her husband’s preference. However, she wanted an option as to what else they could do here.
I would remove the plant on the wall there, get a tv cabinet of some kind (it could also store kids books and toys) and lower the tv to just above the cabinet.
A floor lamp in the corner sort of fills that space behind the chair.
This is better for tv viewing and just feels more intentionally designed.
Designer Q & A on Instgram
If you want access to a designer for a little Q&A once a month, then my Subscriber group on Instagram might be a perfect fit for you. There’s a link on my Instagram profile page. I take questions just prior to the first Saturday of the month and then publish them that day in my stories that are exclusive to my group there.
I have two people there who have gotten a lot of design input for their projects that would have been the equivalent to thousands of dollars of design consulting if done in another way. :-)
