This question was posed to me from someone who had recently moved into their new home. She liked a neutral, modern organic look and wanted to know how to decorate this blank wall above her sofa.
Well, I had a few ideas and it involved a bit more than just the wall.
She has a good start with the basics…..sofa, coffee table and modern chairs. The live edge table sets her in the direction of that organic feel.

Wall Decor Above Sofa
She wanted to know if she should go with one big art piece or look for a pair of vertical pieces. Maybe even something else?
She could really go with either one, even a gallery wall, as long as it has a substantial look overall, when hung. It is a pretty big, blank space.
Based on my own past searches for large art, Usually a pair of vertical pieces are a little easier to find and gives you more flexibility on down the road if you move. I’m going to recommend she go that direction.
I found these two that feel modern / organic and are the size that would work above the sofa at 30” wide x 45” high.
She could do more color or even something less abstract like photography.
Will this make her living room feel done?
Not quite.
She needs some more furnishings and decor to help this space feel more cozy and finished.
More Decor for this Living Room
My first recommendation when decorating walls is to take into account additional furniture or accessories that might be standing in front of the big blank wall. That can help fill in your wall space some or frame it into a smaller space that feels less problematic.
Especially with a big blank wall like this, end tables with lamps will help pare down the size of the wall to be filled. (Bookcases and tall furniture pieces are another way to address big walls, in addition to wall decor.)
While a symmetrical look could work, with matching tables and lamps, I like something a more asymmetrical here. Since two chairs are on one side and the other side is open, doing two different side tables and lamps are going to work well.
I think a dark round table in the left corner with a table lamp and then a smaller, side table on the right with a modern floor lamp would work best.

This lamp is substantial at 27.5” tall.
I like this funky wood table with a sculptural look. It’ll be an interesting organic feature at the end of the sofa on the right, more exposed, side.
A sleek floor lamp beside it would be a nice pairing here.
I’d add some pillows too. Two suede 23” square pillows are nice and substantial. The long lumbar pillow adds some texture.
I think things are looking a little leggy over by the chairs. With all the same type of slim metal legs for tables and chairs, something chunky and more solid looking would be nice here to fill that space.
Maybe the little live edge round table can go in a bedroom or another spot and this one could take its place.
Lastly, a rug. I usually start with that, but this was kind of an add on at the end. She didn’t ask for that but I think it needs it. Because the floor is a different tone from the wood furniture, I’d like to see that separated with a rug and this room needs the softness too.
I like this darker rug with some of the caramel tones in it. It adds a richness to this space.
