I’m sharing a recent consultation here today, a warm, modern bedroom that needed some last layers to complete the look. This homeowner had good start and direction, she just needed to finish everything and make it feel cozy and comfortable.
Here were the pics of her bedroom. The furniture is new and a modern dresser is on the way.
The Parameters
This home is located out on some property in the Texas countryside, so I thought adding in some warmer elements was a good idea.
She could do away with the lamps, but the other furniture was new.
This was her inspiration pic for the wall behind the bed. She liked the idea of doing paneling of some kind, they wanted to tackle a project themselves if possible.
She wanted ideas about bedding, art, lamps, mirrors, and carpet.
Here was my advice:
Accent Wall
First of all, I like the idea of an accent wall here. You have the perfect situation for it, with the bed centered on the wall and no doors or windows there to break up the space. The dark gray is a good choice for the paint color as it will contrast nicely with the light color in the room and the light upholstered headboard.
I think the paneling is a little busy in your inspiration photo, the boxes are a little too small. I have a scale of gridwork that I like, in the sketch below.
Mirrors
I like this mirror, it has antiqued mirrored panels and I think the size will work well. Hang them vertically, obviously, above your nightstands. It looks modern, but the antiqued look adds some texture and age so it isn't all too shiny new.
Lamps
Taller lamps in a light finish will be nice. Basically, since you are going dark on the wall and your nightstands are dark, then I think they should be lighter for contrast. I like the idea of white fabric lamp shades, again to soften the wall and contrast there. These gray lamps are simple and I like the height. The style works with the clean lines of your furniture.
Art Above The Bed
For art, it is personal preference really. I feel like you will have a lot of boxy shapes on that wall with the paneling, so a typical square or rectangle art piece on top of those might compete. I would recommend going in the direction of something organic and maybe a warm wood tone.
The Phillips Collection has some nice organic pieces and this sort of reminds me of trees that might have been cut from your property. It would scale out well above the bed, I've blocked it out in the sketch, above a king size bed.
Bedding
I like white bedding, but then you can do a gray coverlet over the top if your dogs like to get on the bed. I'd try to match the color of the gray wall, to repeat that in the room. You could use the one you have, or here's another that might work. Just tune the accent wall color to the charcoal gray coverlet you choose.
I like duvets in white sheeting or in white linen, and then throwing the coverlet over the bottom part of the bed. But, if you have dogs that like to get on the bed, or you don't like duvets, then the coverlet is fine.
Pillows
Add throw pillows with some caramel color to bring the warmth down to the bed area. The combo of the animal print and the landscape print here looks kind of rustic, earthy and modern.
Color Scheme
Now you have a color scheme that is coming together, to work with your caramel leather chairs over there in the alcove. The wood and caramel warm up the bedroom and add that rustic element while the charcoal gray and white keeps it crisp and modern.
Carpet
I'd think about a patterned or textured carpet with a low, dense cut pile. That might be best with dogs. Any kind of textural pattern will help hide any soil from your pets and add some interest in this space.
This looks like a cool patterned carpet and I like the colors portrayed here. Not sure what it looks like in person, you'd have to get samples. Stanton has some nice patterned and textured carpets. You can get this brand through a lot of different flooring stores, also through Pro Source, if you have one of those stores near you.
I rather prefer the warm toned colorway here with the dark gray wall.
Other brands of patterned carpet you might check out are Nourison and Masland. There's Stark too, and we all love the Antilocarpa.
Use some gray accents over in the niche by your chairs. A plant in a gray planter would be nice over there.
I think you will have a lovely warm and inviting bedroom! I hope this helps give you some direction.

Okay, maybe I’m giving myself way too much credit here, BUT….. I do know these work. If you don’t believe me, take a peek at the empty shell I received from the rendering team BEFORE I started designing this large living room in the Seasonal Living Virtual Designer Showhouse.
