This living room rug is very distinctive and luxurious and it inspired a whole new overall design plan.
I recently received these pics in a Designed in a Click® consultation. The homeowner had purchased this rug after falling for the unique look seen elsewhere, and wanted to build their living room’s new design around it.
This rug is a Kyle Bunting hair on hide rug in a bold color way. I do think you need to see these rugs in person to really appreciate them, they are highly coveted in the design world. :-) Kudos to this homeowner for making this bold choice!
I couldn’t wait to pull some pieces together to work with this gorgeous rug.
All of the existing items in the room were just left over furniture pieces from other places, so they were replacing everything but the art on the mirrored wall and the piano.

You can see here that the rest of the home is pretty traditional. Although, the dining chairs and their color, caught my eye as inspiration for the living room furniture.
I loved the Asian influence art at the piano, and the rug certainly worked well with that.
With those two elements considered, I settled on a dark, rich blue-green color to relate to the art and the insets of blue in the rug. A sofa in that color would look smashing and rich!
My first thought was a curved sofa, but after reviewing lots of options, I settled on this one, below, from Ambella Home.
I love the interesting shape, it sort of bridges traditional and modern really well. I think it has an inviting look and the silhouette will look lovely against the wall. I did it in the Margaret Lagoon fabric.
From there I went to the coffee table, definitely thinking round and something light and maybe see through so you could see the rug clearly while seated in the room. You want to see all those lovely details!
After trying many, even some wood tables which I also loved, I arrived at this one from Jonathan Adler. I mean, a designer rug deserves a designer coffee table, right?
It just had that bit of Asian influence and added a little sparkle to the room. This piece also bridged the gap of trad and modern. With a wood frame, this table would read distinctly traditional.
Next up were the lounge chairs and I struggled a bit with those. At first I chose a bigger tub type lounge chair with a brass base, but it was just too much brass. I did not want this space to be “glam”.
I ended up bringing in a bit of black with caning in a chair, to get a more “design-neutral” type chair that was still interesting.
I would say this is a clean-lined traditional look. These won’t disappear into the rug and I like that they aren’t another color to introduce to the room. I feel like staying with the two colors of the rug would be best here and I couldn’t see going with the chartreuse. It would just be too matchy then.
I did want to use that color in the room though and settled on these pillows for the sofa. That’s just enough. :-)
I wanted to address the wall above the sofa and I really liked this idea of a swath of lighter blue-green. I like that this art is not really about the subject matter, but about the soft color. I think it is a nice balance to the “art” on the floor.
I’m all about “framing in” an art wall with lamps on each side, especially above a sofa. No different here, so I chose two of these brass floor lamps with the mini shades. Trad yet fresh. :-)
Two wood side tables are good on each side of the sofa, they could even sit a little in front of the sofa, so we can see that wood element mixed into the arrangement.
I suggested new draperies in the same color as the blue in the painting, maybe in a silk, just for the sheen and luxurious nature of it. :-)
Lastly, she wanted a suggestion for a rug for the entry, the one she had definitely didn’t work with the new living room rug in the adjacent space.
I gave her a few suggestions, she would have to do real life color matching here as I’d want these to look intentionally placed together, but you can get samples of most of these rugs. (Click on the images below for their sources).
Here it is all put together. I hope she send pics when she gets it done!
