If you think 80’s inspired furniture design and features are not back in style and trending these days, then you must see what I photographed at High Point Market.
As someone who started my design career in the early 80’s, 1981 to be exact, in an architectural and design firm in Dallas, I remember the large curved forms, the mauve and gray color schemes, and the obsession with everything Post Modern (in other words, Michael Graves).
I remember glass block, vertical blinds, smoke glass table tops, tub chairs, and yes…..big, permed hair and shoulder pads.
I had them all!
OMG, were those pearls? And yes, they put yellow fun fur on my cubicle tackboard for my birthday!
Hee hee, a blast from the past.
I remember this so vividly. I worked on a lot of the “fluffier” jobs in the office, high end residential, retail and hotel, not as much corporate as some of the designers. Hence, the “dizzy decorator”. :-)
Sooooo, you can trust me when I say, I’m seeing a big resurgence in this 80’s style for 2020 and beyond.
When my daughter-in-law showed me a pic of a favorite room she recently saw from an ad that embodied this style, it really brought it home to me that the younger generation is embracing this clean, sleek look with it’s curvy forms and it is time to dive in!
Here’s what I found at High Point that had me reminiscing about 80’s style, but in a fresher, more refined way.
Color Trends From High Point Market
While mauve was the color of the 80’s that stood out most, combined with light gray for a very cool toned look, I saw lots of various pinks at High Point this fall.
These were paired with warmer colors like warm greens, wood tones, and brushed brass finishes.
I don’t think the terms “millennial pink” or “rose gold” apply anymore to describe this pink trend anymore, it is just pink and it takes on an entirely different vibe with these warm toned accents.
CURVY SHAPES SEEN AT HIGH POINT MARKET
Note the pinks and greens in the images below. :-)
These two curved sofas really speak to 80’s style.
I loved these rush seat chairs from Sherrill Furniture. They’re such a nice modern take on this type of chair.
My Personal Fave Find
This was my favorite find from High Point.
It’s a concrete sink vanity from Bradley, a company that has always taken a bold stand with design forward products. I shared some of what they showed last year at High Point, which was a new 80’s direction.
Swivel tub Chairs
Just like I mentioned in my post from last year, swivel chairs were everywhere.
They are actually so handy, I used two in this game room so the room could orient to the seating group, the tv, or swiveled around totally, to the outdoor area and pool.
These below are just a smattering of what I saw.
Although not a tub chair, this is a very 80’s contemporary look to me, in a new swivel recliner from American Leather.
How about it? Are you keen on this more contemporary look that has the 80’s retro vibe? Do you think it will last?
