Another Kitchen Backsplash Dilemma Solved

The reader question I'm featuring today is from a homeowner who was right about her kitchen backsplash. I just had to help her with a small detail.

Hi Carla,

I have run across your blogs and ideas on a few different sites and I would really value an opinion on the backsplash in my kitchen.

I am in the middle of a full remodel. New cabinets, flooring, countertops, backsplash, lighting, etc. I have attached a picture of the “old” kitchen, before the demo.

The basic layout is staying the same. The new cabinets are going to go all the way to ceiling, and I’m opting for a much lighter granite and backsplash. My dilemma is really what to do with the backsplash (or really side splash), on the back counter around the stove.

If you can tell from the picture, the cabinet on the right side, extends out to the curved wall by the archway. The other side meets up to a straight wall. You can see the current backsplash extends all the way out. I’m with you on the “hanging” backsplash.

But, if I end the backsplash in the corner on the left side, where do I end it on the right side? I feel it would look off balance. I was thinking I would bring it out on the left side just to the width of the cabinet? But then I wonder if that straight line down the middle would look odd to? I don’t think I can only tile the back straight wall, because the cabinets on the left would have a portion underneath without a backsplash. I would really appreciate any suggestions!

Here was my response:

I would align both sides with the ends of the upper cabinets. It won't reach the edge of the front of the counter, but that's okay. With your situation, that right side would look weird with only the back wall done. Because of the angle, that side wall appears as a back wall.
