You’d think that with all this staying home we’ve done this year, in 2020, that one would be pretty stir crazy right about now. Especially with the holiday here and really missing seeing close family members, I thought I’d want to get out more. I thought I’d be a little more tired of staying home.
This past week we lost power for about an hour or so. When we went online, on our phones, to check on the time estimate for how long we might be without it, the estimate was for all evening, until 10:30 at night. :-(
I had juuuuust finished up a last email for work and sent out a last request for quotes on some custom items for clients at 5:30. My husband had just mentioned what he was about to prepare for dinner and we were just about to plop in front of the tv for our usual evening these days, watching tv and scrolling on our phones. :-)
We’re soooo boring!
Anyway, with the power out and our phones barely charged, we talked about what we could do, safely.
1) Go to the mall.
Nope. Not that safe likely and we had already bought all our gifts. No need to shop and we hate to shop together anyway. :-/ (I haven’t been to the mall in a year, at least! I only go when I run out of make-up and now I’m starting to buy that online too. Plus, who needs much make-up if you aren’t seeing that many people and wear a mask these days!)
2) Go to a restaurant with outdoor seating.
It was actually cold outside and wet with some intermittent rain, and the thought of sitting outside was not appealing at all.
3) Drive around and look at Christmas lights.
We were planning to do that on Christmas eve this year with my mother-in-law, down in River Oaks in Houston, where the lights are amazing. There aren’t that many impressive lights displays up in our area, I’ve looked a lot over the years and not seen much that was a reason to leave the house.
4) Play a board game by candlelight and get some take away pizza.
That’s what we opted to do. After getting the pizza and draining my phone battery almost completely, I headed to get the Scrabble game to set up on the breakfast table.
Then the lights came back on. Yay!
I’ve always liked staying in, getting cozy, doing something rather mind-numbing in the evenings. I think this isolation has somewhat agreed with me, although I hope I’m not too used to it.
One thing I know that I have enjoyed, is spending time living in my home as we’ve remodeled and finished it out over the years. It’s comfortable for us, it caters to our work habits, cooking habits, lounging habits, and has been a real pleasure to live in during this stay-at-home time.
There is definitely something to be said for finishing out your home in a way that pleases and works for you!

(And yes, I did a full blown Christmas tree this year like I normally do, even though this will be my first Christmas without either of my kids here. I’m so glad I did as it put me in the Christmas spirit and felt so normal. There will be no “Bah-Humbug” around here! :-)
