I’m sharing some of my blogging experience in this post, for those of you that blog, in case you are stumped for content ideas.
This is part of a series I’m going to run this entire next year, to give you 3 ideas for blogposts for the following month, each month this year. These are based on posts that have done well for me at that time of year, so I’m basing these recs on real proof. ;-)
In case you missed this post about how blogging can help your site’s SEO, among other things, then you should be aware that putting up at least one post a month is a good idea. Three would be even better.
It’s end of December and you can start January off with a big bang with one or all of these ideas.
1. Design or decor trends
While we all know it is best NOT to be trendy and we all try not to design that way, there is no doubt that trend posts DO really attract eyeballs.
Trend posts have always done really well for me in January. People always look to see what the latest and greatest thing will be and don’t want to be out of style.
I would suggest trying not be too general because everyone is writing about trends this month, all the big magazines, websites, etc., and you are competing with them online, for eyeballs.
Pick a certain room (like kitchen, bedroom, bath), design element (like color or maybe kitchen countertops, cabinetry, sofas, etc.), or even style (like trending items for a boho look, etc.). Make sure it relates to you, your work, your specialty, etc. For example, a kitchen designer would write something about kitchens, right?
Here are some examples, below, of some posts that did well on my blog in the past. I do a lot of remodeling work, so I do mention trends in remodeling often. Notice all the internal links too. (Okay, I probably overdid those.:-)
BTW, if you don’t put the year in your title, you can push it out again next year on your socials unless there is something major you’ve pointed out that is not on trend anymore.
And sometimes people even like to see if your predictions or trends were on target, so it is good to share these at the same time the next year.
This is a good type of post to put some affiliate marketing links into and to also use some of your work’s images to illustrate the post. You can link internally in your blog to more images or posts you might have about that project too. ;-)
2. Project Updates
Your potential clients, even the ones you are working for now, like to see what you’re up to, especially in the new year.
It’s nice to share some of the projects you’ve completed last year (hopefully with some gorgeous photos that will be good for Pinterest and some internal linking too). Then you can end the post with some notes or a few of the “before” pics of projects you are starting now in the new year.
Here’s an example of a post I did here in December, because of the project featured first there, but this type of post would be good in January too.
Even if everything is all in progress and there are no finished, professionally shot projects to share, some kind of post about your future work is an attention grabber.
Oh…..and don’t hint at something and not spill it. I HATE that and so do other readers. :-)
3. Tips for starting new projects
This is the time of year when everyone is thinking about starting new projects. Whether they start them now or might want to start one in the summer, they usually want to prepare and dream a bit.
This is the perfect time to serve up tips and advice on how to approach design, remodeling or decorating projects, how planning ahead with a designer is a good idea, and how (hint, hint) getting on someone’s schedule now is also the best way to prepare.
I’m sure you all know that I sell some of my design (and blogging) advice in downloadable pdf packages. I typically do some mentioning of those in this month and have, in the past, put out new ones or even bundled some for sale at this time of year. One of those posts linked above is a good example of how I mention those products.
Budget advice is also good, as people need to plan for their expenditures as well. Even publishing blogposts on how your client intake process works, like I did in this post, might prompt a potential client to call you now.
You likey???

I saw an article about interior design trends shared on Facebook a few weeks ago and boy, were there some hot comments left on the Facebook post!
Apparently, people DON'T like hearing that their stuff is out of style. (Obviously.)
